HESSEL CHURCH IS DOING SOMETHING RIGHT

HESSEL CHURCH IS DOING SOMETHING RIGHT

Three weeks ago after our softball game with Hessel Church of Sebastopol, I was leaving the field and had to walk through a bunch of Hesselonians to get to the parking lot. The reason I had to walk through them was because they were all eating dinner together with their families. Someone had coordinated this event because there were Costco pizza boxes all over the place. I was a bit envious as I watched this group of people enjoying themselves and one another as they ate dinner together. I thought to myself, “Hessel must be doing something right.”

Another aspect of Hessel Church that I praise God for is their faithfulness to live out God’s Word in a community that doesn’t really take kindly to Christianity. It blows my mind that there are healthy, thriving churches in Sebastopol, California. It is a real picture to me that God saves people out of darkness into light. How else can you explain it? And God loves doing this. What is Hessel Church doing right? From a distance I see two things that are the main things for any church.

First, they have been faithful to continue to preach and live out the Gospel for a long time. God loves His Gospel, summarized by John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever should believe in Him, should not perish by have eternal life.” The Gospel is the power of God unto salvation, so as Hessel has been faithful to God’s Word, they have enjoyed the fruit of the seeds they have sown.

Second, they have been able to experience the joy of fellowship that the Gospel produces. In other words, people who love Jesus, by instinct love other people who love Jesus. We love others because God first loved us. That is why they have big ol’ pizza parties and enjoy each other, because they love Jesus and Jesus loves them. The love of God compels them to do this. They can’t help it. The outcome of this love and devotion to one another is evangelism. Jesus said “by this (our love for another) all people (even in Sebastopol) will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for another” (John 13:35). So thank you, Hessel Church, for your faithfulness to the Gospel in Sonoma County for a long time. Thank you for coming along side of us when things were tough. My heart is full, as I see the joy and the relationships that have resulted for God’s glory and our county’s good. Keep up the good work!
